My trusty Wal Custom
Mk1 with black poly finish has been my faithful
friend and work collegue for more than 24 years.
I have used it live for nearly every gig I've
done since October '85 and used it to do every
recording session I've done in the studio from
January '86 until now. It has never let me down either
on stage or in the studio and has become part
of my sound. This is testament to the quality
and craftmanship of Electric Wood Ltd who had
been making Wal Basses for more than 29 years.
I was saddened to hear in early 2007 that Pete
'The Fish' Stevens had closed Electric Wood Ltd
due to health reasons. This surely was the end
of a long era, as there aren't any other basses
out there that come close to a Wal Bass for both
craftmanship and quality of sound.
There had been various rumours that someone might
buy Electric Wood Ltd, but I think that this
was for the most part hearsay, that was until
Warren told me back in July '08 that Paul Herman
who used to work for Pete & Wal, would at last
carry on the Wal Basses name. I would like to
wish Paul all the best of luck with the future
production and sales of such an important bass
legacy.
I would just like to add that I am not endorsed
by Wal Basses or Electric Wood Ltd, but if the
opportunity was ever to arise, I'd love to
be an ambassador for the Wal Basses name!
